How to manage people who are smarter than you
The higher you go in an organization, the more you’re expected to make decisions on which you might not have direct experience or expertise


Tips for you

Face your insecurity


  1. the first step is to find out where is the fear coming from. If no one has said anything to you directly or indirectly, it may be a self-doubt and you may be losing confidence on yourself.  



Seek advice

  1. Look for advice from other managers who may have experienced similar challenges. You will feel less alone by talking to those who have experienced it.
  2. it will give you insight into your strengths and the development needs


Get informed

  1. You don't need to have the technical knowledge, but you do need to know about the details and where the problems lie
  2. Today, company is about learning between the boss and the employess
  3.  You can ask a lot of general questions like how’s the progress, where they get stuck to understand what your people do. This motivates your employees, and you may come out with ideas from a different perspective

Face any matter

  1. If you found that your team members concern about your ability to lead, you need to address the matter
  2. You may need to say something like, “I know you have more experience and expertise than I do, and I understand you have concerns about that”. Then tell them whar you can offer to help them, work together and support them. You MUST NOT be arrogant and protect your ego.



Give—and take—feedback  

  1. Never try to give feedback on the area of expertise which you don't have
  2. Keep your comments to areas where you have knowledge

Add value

  1. Add value to the team, such as how you use your network to get work done, how you communicate with stakeholders, etc
  2. Show how you can help your employees get the work done, or help them to develop from the initial state

offer employees room

  1. Create an environment for talent to express
  2. Your role is not to become the smartest person in the office, but lead the team to grow the company

Principles to Remember:

Do
  1. Talk to your manager and your team what you can bring in
  2. Add value to your team and help employees improve their careers
  3. Create an environment for employees to do their jobs without much of interference

Don’t

  1. Ignore feelings of fears; face your negative emotions and look for counsel on how to overcome them
  2. Challenge employees if you feel threatened on specialized knowledge
  3. Be egotistical; if you come across as overconfident, your team won’t trust you
